HP Netbooks Digitimes has learned “that Quanta Computer will begin production of a new 11.6-inch netbook in August and a new 10.1-inch model at the end of 2009 for Hewlett-Packard (HP), while Inventec will begin producing a revision of HP’s 10.1-inch netbook at the end of September, according to industry sources in Taiwan.” What does that mean?  Well, most big names like HP, Dell, Sony, Apple, etc don’t actually produce their products themselves.  Instead, they use contracted manufacturers like Quanta, Compal and Foxconn.  So this announcement essentially means that we will see new HP branded hardware, produced by Quanta in Taiwan late this year. It’s not hugely significant, but it is good news to see big names in the industry producing and innovating on the netbook market.  It’s also comes in the wake of Acer and Asus announcing that they will slow down their netbook plans for 2009, although that also may be changed by Intel’s announcement today regarding Pinetrail. PineTrail – is on scedule, no isn't. Wait, yes it is. Intel new netbook processor, which takes the current 3 ship solution (N270/80+GMA945+ICH7) to a new 2 chip solution was scheduled for release later this year, then delayed , but not anymore, according to Intel’s General Manager Mooley Eden who said: “Pine Trail is on schedule. You can quote me on that… The three chip solution down to two chip solution [is] coming this year.” We’re curious to see what this means for the recent announcement by Acer and Asus stating that they were going to hold off on new netbooks until 2010 awaiting the PineTrail release. Perhaps they’ll rescind that? Share and Enjoy:

While ASUS is busy stuffing DVD burners into Eee PCs , Pioneer and others are working hard to make the integrated optical drive a thing of the past. The freshly announced XD09 measures in at 5.24 x 0.58 x 5.24-inches and 8 ounces, or slightly beefier than your average CD case. Pioneer claims that it’s the most compact drive design yet. Essentially this means if you can carry your optical media around with you, then you can carry the player for it too. Power comes via the USB 2.0 connection, and all the usual DVD plus, minus, reading, writing, dual-layer mumbo jumbo is retained with top writing speeds of 8x on single-layer and 6x on double-layer media. This inspired minimalism can be yours for $79.99 in August. New Acer and Asus netbooks suspended for 2009 Acer and ASUS are said to be freezing new netbooks  in the second half of 2009, according to Digitimes , in response to Intel’s decision to delay the launch of their new Pine Trail-M platform until Q1 2010. In the meantime, Acer and Asus are said to be changing focus to the thin and light notebook segment using Intel’s CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) processors instead of Atom CPUs. There’s a bit more bad news, ASUS is said to be delaying the launch of the 10” T101H tablet netbook until after Windows 7 launches in October. Share and Enjoy:

An inspector on the RunCore SSD line From Tweaktown , we have an interesting video inside the  Runcore facility in Hangzhou, China where they are producingtheir 1.8-inch Pro IV SSD line.  It’s a pretty thorough video, and I did find myself skipping through a few sections but you’ll get to see the high speed SMT (Surface Mount Technology) machine in action, and also get an interesting look at the, suprisingly manual, testing and packaging steps.  I really couldn’t believe on how much was still done by hand, and how time consuming it was. Anyway, check out the video after the break. Share and Enjoy:

Sony Vaio W Netbook *Update:  There’s a quick video from Stuff.tv after the break. Computer Shopper has released a review of the new Sony Vaio W netbook.  Unfortunately, there isn’t too much excitement here.  The Sony has the usual netbook specs (see full specs below) but did impress the reviewer with it’s high res. screen (1,366×768) which was also bright and very accurate color-wise. The keyboard was just adequate, with good key feel, but with an awkward layout, particularly noticeable with the right shift key.  It also felt a bit cramped at just 9 inches wide, lacking a full inch in width compared with newer netbooks. Overall, they scored the netbook, which retails for $499 in the US, a 7.6.  They liked the stylish design and screen, but felt the rest of the netbook was a bit uninspired. The Sony Vaio W should hit the UK around mid-August and is available to pre-order from Amazon for £430.00 now. Read past the break for the full specs: Specs: Processor: 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 Memory: 1GB RAM Storage: 160GB hard drive Optical Drive: None Screen: 10.1 inches (1,366×768 native resolution) Graphics: Integrated Intel GMA 950 Weight: 2.6 pounds Dimensions (HWD): 1.3×10.5×7.1 inches Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition Share and Enjoy:

DIY Acer Aspire One 1080p edition Over at Terracode , they’ve done some major work to incorporate Broadcom’s HD Accelerator mini PCI-e card (model BCM70012) into the Acer Aspire one.  There were two options to install the external graphics accelerator, either older on a mini pci-e connector into the existing traces on the motherboard or remove the 802.11g Wi-Fi card from it’s mini PCI-e slot and install it there.  Initially, soldering was attempted, but after a botched attempt (due to the tiny traces on the motherboard), the Broadcom card was slotted into the Wi-Fi card’s place.  That necessitates the use of a US B Wi-FI card, but they though it was worth it to see how the HD ugprade would perform.  While they were at it, they also upgraded the HD to a Kingston ssdNow V series 64 GB SATA solid state drive and upped the RAM from 1gb to 2gb. Performance wise the upgrade was a success.  By installing the  mini PCI-e card video decoding and scaling was off-loaded from teh processor onto the new graphics processor (Broadcom PCIe card).  That reducedthe load on the CPU and allows full screen smooth 1080P playback. You may be thinking, what good is 1080p resolution on a netbook screen, and you would be right.  The guys used an external monitor, capable of 1920×1080 pixels vs. the Acer’s 1024×600 pixel screen. Read on for side by side video performance comparisons and a cost breakdown. Project Cost Breakdown (in US dollars) Acer AOA150-1706: $259.00 on sale Broadcom BCM70012: $40.00 (EBay) Kingston SNV-125-S2BD/64GB: $129.00 on sale 1 GB DDR2-5300 DIMM: $14 Total cost $442.00. The cost of a similarly equipped HP Mini 110 XP is $444.00 (32 GB SSD and 1 GB memory). Share and Enjoy:
