by admin on September 30, 2009

One of many fake screenshots of Google Chrome OS Early this month, we skeptically reported that we’d see Google Chrome OS devices ‘later this month’ .   Well, it’s the end of the month, and no sign of such devices.  There is, however, a fresh rumour that we’ll see Chrome OS next month. Shanzai reports that the latest from “trusted industry insider sources” say we can expect devices running Google’s Chrome OS in mid-October. We’re still skeptical… Via Netbooked & Shanzai.com Share and Enjoy:

Windows 7 Launches Oct. 22 Up until today, Microsoft has insisted that manfucturers would only be allowed to pre-load Windows 7 Starter Edition on new netbooks. But, I’m happy to announcs that today Microsoft has reversed that policy, and netbooks can now be shipped with any version of Windows 7 – Starter, Ultimate, Professional, etc. We welcome the change, but still think we’ll see most netbooks shipping with Windows 7 Starter due to low cost and margins on netbooks. The primary drawbacks of Starter versus the other editions are no DVD playback, and no ability to customize your desktop wallpaper and themes. By the way, you can pre-order Windows 7 today at Amazon UK and be one of the first to get your copy on the Oct 22 launch date of Windows 7. Share and Enjoy:

Mobinnova Elan powered by Nvidia Tegra Nvidia is showing off a new netbook at trade shows called the e Mobinnova élan and it’s one of the first netbooks built around the NVIDIA Tegra platform which combines an ARM-based processor with a high performance NVIDIA graphics chip. That means it can handle 1080p video playback and get excellent battery life. NVIDIA says the Mobinnova élan can run for 5 to 10 hours while playing HD video and much longer if all you’re doing is web surfing or other lighter weight tasks. The NVIDIA folks said Mobinnova élan will cost about $299 in the US when it’s released but we don’t know yet if they have any plans to bring this Tegra netbook to the UK. via Shanzai.com and Liliputing Share and Enjoy:

Tegra, Nvidia’s upcoming Smartbook chip, will run Google’s Chrome OS

September 25, 2009

Nvidia's Tegra chip will run Google's Chrome OS JkontheRun received confirmation from NVIDIA that it’s jupcoming Tegra smartbook platform will be able to run Google’s new, upcoming and eagerly awaited Chome operating system which we may see as soon as later this year .  Tegra is an ARM-based processor and Google announced that its Chrome OS will be compatible with both  ARM and x86 systems ranging in size from netbooks to full-size desktops. JkontheRun provides some interesting insight and states, Nvidia sees the devices as “dehydrated laptops.” Consumers still want support for x86 and Windows, but why? It’s all in the application support these days, but with the rise of the web as “the ultimate app store,” Nvidia is poised for the shift. Share and Enjoy:

Intels shows us a basic Atom processor roadmap at IDF 2009

September 25, 2009

The Intel Atom Roadmap Intel has finally revealed that it will be providing it’s next generation of Atom chips to netbook manufacturers this year, putting a lot of speculation to rest .  But actually, it’s not quite that straight forward and we probably still won’t see netbooks with the new Atom processor until early 2010. That’s because it will take that long for the manufacturers to bring the new netbooks to market.  The new processors offer little in speed increases, but do have significant gains in power consumption in size.  Replacing the current ubiquitious Atom N270 and N280s, these new Atom processors are part of Intel’s ‘System on a chip’ design, combining the CPU and graphics processor on one chip. Looking ahead, Intel has unveiled that aim to decrease the manufacturing process size by threefold again, bringing the current 45nm process used in the new Atom down to just 15nm. Share and Enjoy:
