I’m thinking of purchasing a netbook because my laptop broke and it would be so much cheaper to buy a little netbook rather than a new laptop. Can anyone give me some examples of things you can’t do with a netbook that a laptop is capable of doing? Thanks in advance, this will be really helpful in my decision.
P.S. I’m a college student also, so I will definitely be writing papers and such.
The HP Mini 311 is the first netbook to ship with Nvidia Ion The recently announced HP / Compaq Mini 311 has just become the first netbook with NVIDIA’s Ion to start shipping to customers (in the US at least). The Mini 311 is branded as an Hewlett Packard (HP) in the States, but will be called the Compaq Mini 311. Unfortunately, UK customers will have to wait until the release of Windows 7 to start receiving their Mini 311s, but you can pre-order here at Amazon for £329.99 . In the US it’s up for order right now starting at $399.99 and extras can be ordered at the following prices: white chassis ($20), Atom N280 ($25), Bluetooth ($25), 802.11n ($25) and integrated WWAN ($125). Arrington review the HP DreamScreen – Crunchpad makes a cameo appearance Michael Arrington, of Techcrunch.com, went out and bought one of the first HP DreamScreens and has reviewed it on video. While some blogs touted this as the Apple iTablet killer, it quickly becomes apparent that Arrington does not buy into this point of view. Arrnington himself is quick to point out his conflict of interest – his company is currently developing the Crunchpad tablet which is due out in November and , conveniently, makes a cameo appearance on his desk during the review(see image above). Among the faults that Arrington points out: – No Touchscreen (navigation is by some touch sensitive buttons on the side of the screen) – No battery. (the HP does not function without being plugged in) – No internet browser. Those are some serious drawbacks, and I agree with Arrington. It we look at the HP DreamScreen as a netbook/tablet it falls far short. It really just is a glorified digital foto frame. Check out the full review after the break. Share and Enjoy:

Toshiba drives featuring the new mSata connector Up until now, the solid state drives (SSDs) for netbooks have come in all different sizes, shapes and with a mish mash of different connectors. The SATA-IO workgroup however, has just made an announcement that should make your SSD easier though – they’ve launched a new mini-SATA standard called mSATA which should standardize the connector used in future netbook solid state hard drives. Toshiba’s is the first major manufacturer to produce SSDs using the new mSATA connector, using a 32nm process to create drives in 30 and 62GB sizes. Toshiba is the first but expect to see mSATA drives and machines from all the major manufacturers like Samsung, Dell, HP, SanDisk, Lenovo, STEC, and Toshiba. MSI Wind U110 Eco has a 9 cell battery Engadget reports that a new MSI Wind is selling over in the States – it’s called the MSI Wind U110 Eco and it ships with a powerful 9-cell battery that promises up to 15 hours of life on a single charge. Granted, that’s a claimed number and not real life. So we’ll have to wait and see, but there’s a good chance it will be more than 10 hours. The rest of the specs on this MSI are: 1.6GHz Atom Z530 CPU, Windows XP Home, GMA500 graphics, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi, a 1.3 megapixel camera, gigabit Ethernet, a trio of USB 2.0 ports and a 4-in-1 card reader. Unfortunately, we haven’t spotted it anywhere on this side of the pond, but Amazon Uk does have the regular MSI U100 for just £249.99 and the nifty, but pricey MSI Wind U115 hybird . I want to buy a netbook off CL. How do i make sure the computer isn’t stolen or messed up or anything of that nature?
Cool Bananas Netbook Envelope Case Review Gearzap.com were kind enough to send us one of their awesome Envelope Netbook cases to review and play with. NOTE – our camera failed dismally with transfering the pics onto our netbook to use in the review, so we’ll try and get them up this week. It looks awesome, and the quality of material used is extremely high – as one would expect from Cool Bananas. We got the white one and it really stands out. Initially we were a little nervous that it would pick up lots of dirt/stains easily, however this was not the case, and even when it does get a little dirty, a quick wipe with a damp cloth cleans it up nicely. The leather material used feels tough and won’t rip/tear (within reason). The stitching/ribbing along the edges is very strong and robust and will certainly last as well. To close the case you use a magnetic button which works well and clips closed and opened easily. Look inside the case and Cool Bananas have used a lovely soft velour that is gentle on your netbook and poses zero scratch problems. Our netbook fits super snug in the Envelope Case and doesnt slip out easily. Although not water tight, the material will protect a netbook from small spills and a little rain. Talking about protection, this is not a hardcover netbook case , so don’t expect it to protect your netbook against falls and bad bumps. There is little to no padding and the base is also not padded. That being said, it was never meant to be used as a protective bag, but rather as a stylish, novel carry case. One thing we were thinking was whether it would look better, and be more useful, with a shoulder strap. However after asking a few friends opinions we all decided it works best the way it is. It really is a beauty of a netbook case and very novel indeed. If you are not looking for a protective netbook case, but want something that looks smart and stylish, then the Netbook Envelope Case is for you. Get it from Gearzap.com for £17.95 Share/Save
