Brad at Liliputing took a look at the new Acer Aspire One 721 which is a 11.6 inch thin and light notebook (1366 x 768 pixels) powered by a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K125 processor and ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics. This Aspire One 721 is much like the Acer Aspire One 521 that we posted an unboxing and review of earlier. The main differences between the 721 and the 521 are a larger 11.6″ screen on the 721, which also makes reoom for a full sized keyboard. We suspect battery life should be shorter for the 721 as well since it needs to power the larger, higher resolution screen. First impressions were pretty good. The thin & light has a matte finish on the lid, which resists fingerprints. There’s a large access panel on the bottom which provides access to the RAM and HD, which should make upgrades a breeze. Overally, he seems quite happy with the AMD and ATI graphics performance-wise, but we’ll wait for the full review to make a full judgment.

Asus has posted a product page for the Eee PC 1015PD . This new 10 inch netbook model comes with either a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 or 1.83GHz Intel Atom N475 processor, GMA 3150 graphics, and 1 to 2GB of DDR3 memory. The netbook will be available with a 160GB, 250GB, or 320GB hard drive, and 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0. There are four battery options, which will vary by configuration: 3 cell, 23Whr 6 cell, 48Whr 6 cell, 56Whr 6 cell, 63Whr Asus says those batteries should be good for between 4.5 and 13 hours of run time, although manufacturer’s battery life estimates are usually only good in best case scenarios. And that’s about it for the impressive specs. From here on out, we’ve only got standard netbook fare, including a 0.3MP webcam, 1024 x 600 pixel display, VGA output, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, mic and headphone jacks, and a SDHC card slot. It runs Windows 7 Starter Edition and has the Asus Express Gate quick boot software as well. via Eee PC News.de

Shanzai.com spotted this knockoff Sony Vaio W knockoff from China which apart from bearing a distinct resemblance to the current Sony Vaio W netbook , it even has the Sony Vaio brand name plastered all over it. There are differences between the actual Vaio W netbook and this clone.  For example, the Sony netbook has a textured touchpad, for instance, while the knockoff looks to havea smooth one. There are also chrome edges that on the clone that the Sony Vaio W does not have. Spec-wise, the Vaio knockoff is a pretty standard netbook with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 or 1.66GHz Atom N280 processor, 1GB of memory, and a 160GB hard drive. It sells for the equivalent of about $240.

LG boasts the slogan, ‘Life’s Good’ and with the 10 inch X140 netbook, they hope that holds true. This LG netbook packs a little more punch than some of it’s netbook brethren. For example, it has a 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display and a 1.83GHz Intel Atom N475 processor. It also comes with a 320GB hard drive. That’s compared with most netbooks, which tend to have 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processors, 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel displays, and 160GB or 250GB hard drives. But, there’s still only integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics, 1GB of RAM and Windows 7 Starter Edition.  The LG X140 is expected to launch in Asia and the Middle East, but not int he US or Europe. It will sell for the equivalent of about $500. via CNET Asia and nDevil

Plextor has been showing off their external bluray drive – the Plextor PX-B120U . At just $99 (in the US), it’s the cheapest price we’ve seen on an external bluray drive, and the fact that it is powered over USB means that you won’t have to carry around an annoying power brick, or have to look for another outlet. On the downside, this is just a BD-ROM drive, which means you can watch videos, but you can’t burn them. Also, do’t bother if your netbook or nettop has basic Intel integrated graphics. You won’t be able to watch bluray unles you have Nvidia Ion, or another upgraded graphics solution. We checked, but couldn’t find it for sale in the UK yet, but we’re sure it’s coming soon. via Engadget

Chip designer ARM has announced an agreement with semiconductor manufacturer TSMC that will seek to utilize 28nm (nano-meter) and eventually 20nm production processes. This should lead to smaller, more efficient, and more powerful chips to power netbooks, smartbooks, smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices. The current ARM and TSCM chips utilize 40nm technology, so you can see this will be quite a leap ahead. ARM says the agreement will allow the company to start developing the technology for the new chips as soon as possible — although it could be a while before we see these new chips hit the streets. via Engadget

As we noted earlier, new Asus Eee PC 1215N is to start shipping in August (for the States at least) but that didn’t stop the folks at Netbook Live from getting their hands one and putting it through its paces. On first impression, the 1215N is a real powerhouse, with a dual core Atom D525 processor and NVIDIA ION 2 graphics. That should mean that multitasking duties as well as HD video playback will be a breeze – possibly even some 3D video gaming while you’re at it. The combination of the Atom D525 processor and the next-generation NVIDIA ION graphics seems to be a winner, as the netbook scored 2671 on the 3DMark06 benchmark — which is more than a thousand points higher than the Asus Eee PC 1201N , which has an older dual core Atom 330 processor and first generation NVIDIA ION graphics. You can find more details, as well as some additional benchmark results at Netbook Live .

Liliputing got a HP Mini 210 HD to review, and made the unboxing video above. The HP Mini 210 HD, which comes with a high resolution 1366 x 768 pixel 10 inch display. First impressions of the HP Mini 210HD are: – Likes the sleek design of theHP Mini 210. Bottom surface is smooth, giving streamlined appearance – Chiclet style keyboard is easy to use, good layout. – Not wild about the integrated touchpad buttons. – Glossy screen hard to read in direct sunlight. There’s a review coming later, with particular focus on the high resolution display. Other netbooks equipped with the Intel Atom processors and a high-res 1366 x 768 pixel displays have proven to be sluggish. The HP Mini 210 HD can be configured with a Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator to help with video playback, but this demo unit doesn’t have one, so we’ll wait and see what the results are like. The regular (non-HD) HP Mini 210 is on sale now at Amazon UK for £249.99 with free shipping.
