I’m a writer and I’d love to have a small laptop to work on when I’m away from my desktop. Basically I’m looking for the digital equivalent of a notebook (I have atrocious writing). All I really want to use on it, besides the web browser, is Microsoft Word and a script-writing program called Movie Magic Screenwriter. Can a netbook handle those kinds of programs, or is it exclusively for internet use?

Yes. Most certainly. If there is trouble using it though, get a Google account and use the online word editing. Netbooks can run these programs very easily though, but you have to download them from the internet or from a USB flash drive, as they do not have a CD drive usually. Good luck though!
A netbook is more than capable than running MS Word, OpenOffice.org or any other office suite. Note however that most netbooks do not have CD/DVD-ROM drives– you will have to find an alternate means of installation if you use an installation CD.
Yes thats the kind of uses a netbook was made for. Have fun
