Yes, you can get cover after initial purchase, but think carefully before you do. Most warranty cover is not worth the paper its written on , it is offered to gain extra revenue out of each customer, you would need to read the small print carefully.
Most new items purchased have an automatic 12 month warranty by law (there are a few exceptions). So, if anything should go wrong physically with the hardware within 12 months, then it should be returned to the retailer to be fixed or replaced (software problems are not included).
I would however, talk to one of the reputable insurance companies about new for old theft and accidental damage cover with maintenance cover included, it should be cheaper as well.
