Genesi Launches Efika Mx Arm Processor Netbook

by admin on September 3, 2010

Genesi USA has launched somewhat of a rarity in today’s netbook market.  It’s a netgbook with a  10.1 inch display like most other netbooks, but under the hood is an 800MHz Freescale i.MX515 ARM Cortex-A8 processor. It’s called the  Efika MX , and Genesi says it’s powerful enough to handle 720p HD video playback.  The device has a 1024 x 600 pixel display, 16GB of storage space, WiFi, Bluetooth, and an optional 3G modem, as well as a 1.3MP camera, SD card reader, and mic and headphone inputs. The netbook weighs about 2 pounds and measures about 0.8 inches thick, runsLinux and uses less than 12 watts of power.  Pricing should comes in at $349 , directly from Genesi USA.  Unfortunately for them, one can get a  Windows 7 netbook for about $50 less in the US.  Then again, it uses much more than 12 watts and weighs more than 2lbs.  We just wish it would come to the UK, and for about half the price. via  Blogeee and  Netbook News

That makes sense, since Intel recently announced that the chip would be available in a number of netbooks including models from HP, Asus , Acer, Lenovo, Samsung, and others. Amd Shows Off New Bobcat Low Power Cpus

by admin on August 25, 2010

AMD’s new low power, moderate performance chips feature in the new Acer Aspire One 521 and Dell Inspiron M101z.  But, AMD is not content to leave it there.  Today AMD unveiled new details about its upcoming Bobcat platform for small, low power devices such as netbooks, nettops, and tablets. The new Bobcat is the processor core that will show up in the Ontario chips due out in early 2011. AMD says Bobcat is capable of operating on less than a watt of energy, but it’s an x86 processor with out0of-order execution, which means it should be more than capable of powering Windows and other complex operating systems. The Bobcat core offers 90% of the power you expect from a mainstream chip today, while using less than half the silicon area. Ontario chips will combine the Bobcat CPU with a graphics processor and high speed bus to offer a complete chipset. No word yet on how the AMD Bobcat chops will compare  to the goliath on the block – namely Intel with their Intel’s Atom  and ULV platforms.   By the time these new chips are released early next year Intel will likely have launched its next-generation Oak Trail platform for mobile devices.  Likely provding stiff competition.

Acer’s latest in the ‘Acer Aspire One’ series is the recently launched Acer Aspire One D255 .  This new netbook runs both Windows and Google Android.  Sascha from Netbook News.de managed to  pick one up in Taiwan recently and made the unboxing video (above) for our viewing pleasure. The netbook runs about $289 in Taiwain and comes with 1GB of memory, a 160GB hard drive, and Windows XP as well as Android. In order to boot Google Android, you’ll need to first launch Windows and run a utility to configure the computer to boot Android. Once you do manage to get into Android, you’ll notice that Acer has configured the operating system to use a mouse cursor — something which most Android devices don’t need.

Laptop Magazine takes a look at the new Toshiba Satellite T215D.  It’s a budget thin & light, powered by a single Core 1.7GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K125 processor that proves to be much more powerful than the Atom processors we seen in the majority of netbooks.  It’s not quite as powerful as the full powered Intel Core 2 processors though. An  ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics chipset takes care of vidoe, and is  much more powerful than integrated Intel graphics.  It weighs just 3.3 pounds and has an attractive chrome-style design.  Laptop magazine’s  reviewer thought the keyboard felt cramped and that the touchpad buttons could have been better positioned though. Check out the full review and pictures at Laptop Magazine .

[review] Amd Powered Lenovo Thinkpad X100e Business Netbook

August 3, 2010

Brad, at Liliputing , has put up a review on Lenovo’s business netbook, named the X100e.  The machine tested here has a dual core 1.6GHz  AMD Turion Neo X2 L625 processor and ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics along with 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 250GB hard drive, and a 6 cell battery.   There’s also 802.b/g/n WiFi, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit and an 11.6 inch display with a native resolutoin of 1366 x 768 pixels. Quick summary. -  Sturdy case design despite weighing just 3.3 pounds with a 6 cell battery. - Matte case material, and matte screen resist fingerprints and sun glare. - ThinkPad X100e is about twice as fast as a typical netbook - 5 hour battery life is just average, although fair considering performance. At $499 in the states (about 300GBP), it’s well priced, although the AMD processor used is already looking a bit dated.  Overall though, we agree with Brad that the Thinkpad X100e is a good combination performance, power consumption and price. The best price we’ve found the Lenovo Thinkpad X100e for here in the UK is just under £400 via Amazon UK.  You can find that deal here.

Asus launches Eee PC 1015PD 10″ netbook

July 29, 2010

Asus has posted a  product page for the Eee PC 1015PD . This new 10 inch netbook model comes with either a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 or 1.83GHz Intel Atom N475 processor, GMA 3150 graphics, and 1 to 2GB of DDR3 memory. The netbook will be available with a 160GB, 250GB, or 320GB hard drive, and 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0. There are four battery options, which will vary by configuration: 3 cell, 23Whr 6 cell, 48Whr 6 cell, 56Whr 6 cell, 63Whr Asus says those batteries should be good for between 4.5 and 13 hours of run time, although manufacturer’s battery life estimates are usually only good in best case scenarios. And that’s about it for the impressive specs. From here on out, we’ve only got standard netbook fare, including a 0.3MP webcam, 1024 x 600 pixel display, VGA output, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, mic and headphone jacks, and a SDHC card slot.
