AmigaOS is the OS largely forgotten by time. It came before Windows, Mac, and Linux operating system and was originally designed for Amiga computers sold by Commodore starting in the 1980s. It quickly earned a a reputation for offering high quality graphics and advanced multitasking capabilities. Recently AmigaKit and A-Eon Technology have launched a new desktop computer designed to run AmigaOS 4.1 called the AmigaOne X1000. It uses a 1.8 GHz dual core processor, ATI Radeon R700 graphics, 2GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive. But, Hyperion’s Steven Solie and Hans-Joerg Frieden have also confirmed that a new AmigaOS powered netbook will also be built. It will run AmigaOS 4 as the desktop PC, and will be powered by a PowerPC processor. It’s expected to cost between$300 and $500 US dollars and the netbook in testing. Prototypes are said to be equipped with 512MB of RAM, a small amount of flash storage, integrated graphics, 2 USB ports, WiFi, and Ethernet. Those details are all subject to change though. The netbook is expected to launch by the middle of 2012. via OS News

ASUS chairman Jonney Shih was just interviewed by Walt Mossberg at AsiaD. On the topic of netbooks, Shih notes that rather than being buried, netbooks are simply “evolving.” Even more importantly, however, whe confirmed that a new ASUS netbook is en route: “You’ll see on our new netbook, it’ll be very thin.” In fact, he even suggested that the design may follow that of the Zenbook, but just… smaller. So, that sounds quite promising from the manufacturer that was at the very forefront of the netbook trend. We, here at NetbookReview couldn’t agree more. Sure, some people have and will continue to replace their netbooks eith tablets, but for many others, a netbook is the device they prefer.

Sony launched the Vaio YB earlier this year with the 1.6 GHz AMD E-350 chip and Radeon HD 6250 graphics. Today, Sony’s 11.6 inch notebook, it looks like it now packs a little more power. Sony has quietly updated its Vaio YB-series budget notebook line to include AMD’s latest 1.65 GHz AMD E-450 dual core processor and Radeon HD 6310 graphics. The rest of the specs haven’t changed, and it still packsa healthy 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 500GB, 5400RPM hard drive, and an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display. It runs Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. The Sony Vaio YB measures 11.4″ x 8″ x 1.25″ and weighs about 3.2 pounds. It has 3 USB ports, a VGA port, HDMI port, mic and headphone jacks, and a flash card reader that can handle SD cards and Sony Memory Stick Duo cards. It’s not a surprising move, as the Asus Eee PC 1215B, MSI Wind U270, and HP Pavilion dm1 have all gone the same route and swapped the previous generation E-350 processors for E-450.

The name that Asus is giving the line is ‘Zenbook’ but the individual models will be called the Asus UX21 and Asus UX31. In total, there will be 5 different models, two with 11.6 inch displays, while there will be three models with 13.3 inch screens. These will be among the first notebooks to launch as part of the Intel ultrabook platform. All of the models are fitted as standard with solid state disks, 4GB of RAM, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and 0.3MP webcams. There is 1 USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port, an audio jack, microHDMI port, and xmini VGA port and run Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. All three models will have Intel GMA 3000 HD graphics. Impressively, Asus says the Zenbooks resume from sleep in 2 seconds, and automatically backup your data to the solid state disk when battery power reaches 5 percent capacity. They also features Asus Super Hybrid Engine technology which adjusts the CPU speed and other settings to prioritize battery life or performance depending on what you need. Asus CEO Jerry Shen says the idea is to deliver a smartphone-like, instant-on, ultraportable experience in a notebook-like form factor. Check out a run-down of the different models after the break. We saw the Asus Eee PC 1025C netbook at the FCC just a few days ago, and now it’s followed by the Eee PC 1025CE . As the same implies, the two netbooks are virtually identical. They have the same case design, the same keyboard and 10 inch screen. But there are a few subtle differences which suggest that the Eee PC 1025CE will be the more expensive model. The Eee PC 1025CE has 2 USB 2.0 ports and a USB 3.0 port, while the cheaper model just has 3 USB 2.0 ports. The Eee PC 1025CE also has Bluetooth and a there may even be a 4G WiMAX option, while the Eee PC 1025C is WiFi-only. The Eee PC 1025CE also has a matte screen while its sibling appears to have a glossy display. Asus hasn’t released UK pricing or release date details yet.

In short, no. Netbook prices continue to fall and these small, light laptops represent and there are far more people walking around with 10 inch laptops that weigh less than 3 pounds than there were a few years ago. Most of these people probably bought a netbook in addition to a more powerful notebook. For those of you, however, that want to replace your laptop Intel is hoping you’ll consider an ultrabook – Intel’s new design this summer for thin and light computers with solid state disks, higher-performance processors and higher resolution displays than you’ll find on most netbooks. They’ll also carry higher price tags. Intel wants ultrabooks to sell for under $1000.

The computer measures 8.5″ x 4.3″ and weighs about 0.8 pounds. It’s said to get about 10 hours of battery life. There’s no word on what kind of processor it uses.
