Is a netbook powerful enough to run Word and iTunes?

I would like to buy a netbook instead of a laptop (cheaper and more portable). But I am worried that it wont be a good choice for word processing and my music. Does anyone here use a netbook for Word and iTunes, and is it adequate? Any brand/model recommendations? Thanks a lot for the input.

You should try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.

Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

Yes. Get an Acer or Eee, they have models that can accommodate 2GB of Ram and 802.11n wireless internet.

A netbook isn’t intended for power. By definition, a netbook is a "casual" computer, intended for very basic needs, basic surfing, email, looking at a few pics, etc. That’s why they’re cheap. They were never intended as "primary" computers. If you’re looking for power, buy a laptop. Please read this: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/hiner/?p=3348&tag=nl.e550

That’s pretty much what lightweight laptops are designed for – a few simple tasks. You should have no problem at all.

Hi, I’ve been using for a few weeks now the “Windows 7 Zoostorm FreedomXL 250GB 10.2in Netbook” from argos (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5083053.htm)

Windows 7 version of wordpad/write is just like MS Word from MS office but included with the laptop ready. You can download open office which is free to use, and seems to work well with itunes (when it installed) and with audible (audio books) setup.

The machine is quiet, Battery lasts around 2.5 to 3 hours, another 45 mins if you turn off wireless & USB allowing long times to type or write, but kinda cuts off internet if turned off. Found I could buy spare batteries for about £30 delivered which has meant long times of use easily.

I’d recommend it. Its been nice and small, and light yet nice sized screen to use.
