Netbook is basically a trim-down version of laptop, both in size and capabilities.
With that said, netbook is smaller in term of size (typically 12-14 inch screen) and less powerful, minimal graphics, usually does not have internal DVD or CD drive, small keyboard, etc.
Laptop is bigger (typically 14-17 inch screen) and more powerful, full feature keyboard, usually comes with internal DVD-ROM or even DVD-RW drive.
What you want to buy is actually depends on your needs
If you not gonna do much beside surfing the web, checking email, listen to online music, word processing then a netbook is perfect
A laptop is capable of everything a netbook can do (at faster rate too) and more.
It can do heavier tasks such as editing videos/photos, authorizing movies, burning disc, etc.
Also Netbooks do not come with CD/DVD/BD players like a laptop, but they also do not lose value like a laptop does either.
netbooks are basically small, slow, generally crap versions of laptops. Take it from me because I have one — it sits on my desk with the keyboard ripped off, innards on full view, raised off the desk because it gets so hot – I have to keep it like this to prevent the exhaust fan from being on full blast constantly. It is also hooked up to an external monitor with keyboard and mouse because the screen is so small I have to hunch over to see it. So basically, the original portability factor is completely lost by crap design, and a rubbish battery to go with it. The battery is only useful as an arbitrary power source in case the power goes out. You’re lucky to get an hour and a half out of it. They are nothing but hype and really not ergonomical to use, at all. Spend a few more notes on a full sized laptop which is at least 5x more powerful and will probably last longer.
