Why does the battery in my Netbook only work after it was started with the power cord?

My Acer Aspire Netbook doesn’t bootup when it’s unplugged. When I plug it in, it will turn on. I pull out the power cord and it works on the battery fine. Is this a hardware issue? Can this be part of my power settings? Any ideas?
It’s less than 5 months old.
