Would it be worth it to upgrade my netbook from windows 7 starter to professional?

The reason I say professional is because I can get it with my student discount.

I’m going to be using my netbook for writing papers, surfing the web, and youtube.

Hi,

It seems to me that Starter meets your expectations perfectly, i’ve concluded from what you have written. Windows 7 Professional would simply have to much features that you do not need, (clutter your pc) you can spend your money on things you really need. I have made two lists, so you can compare both options:

Windows 7 Starter supports:
- Windows Aero
- DVD playback
- Windows Media Center
- IIS Web Server (Internet Information Server)
- Internet connection sharing.
- Supports only one processor.

This means that you can do all yoall ready with the edition you allready have. If you do want to play heavy games, you can buy one multicore processor, hence all versions of Windows 7 support multicore CPU’s.

Windows 7 Professional supports all features of the Starter Edition, plus:
- EFS (encrypted file system)
- Remote Desktop Host (you can approve access to someone who needs remote view on you computer, if you have a issue) BUT yuo can also use LogMeIn to solve this.
- Joining your computer to a domain in a networking environment.
- Two physical processors

These editions both do not support enterprise features such as Encrypting File System (EFS), AppLocker, DirectAccess, BitLocker, Remote Desktop Host, and BranchCache.

For whatever those options is of your concern, I would stick stay with Starter.

Hope this helps,

I’d say so, Starter is a castrated version of Windows 7 to begin with.

if you can get it cheap I would say so.

For the purposes you have shared.. it does not seems the need of the time…

Best would be that you stick with the one you have right now.. If the requirements increases you can think that on later stage

Hello Richie,

It is really up to you! The programs you mention will run great on the starter. You can compare the features between versions here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/starter.aspx,

Good Luck!
